What We Do

Entertainment Design Corporation (EDC) is extremely proud to have created the scenic look for the Opening & Closing Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Entertainment Design Magazine recently published an article describing the arduous (yet rewarding) production, entitled Design as a Team Sport.

"The entire project was conceived over a period of 2½ years," said Jeremy Railton, EDC founder and Production Designer for both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. "The design evolved through the course of many meetings and workshops with the producers, director, choreographers, and costume & puppet designers."

As the script evolved, the design changed to fit its needs and the needs of Olympic protocol, right up to the day the games began.

"There were many technical requirements for the set," said Richard Schreiber, a Senior partner at EDC and Art Director, for the entire project. "To stay true to the design, we had to bury all the cables, integrate an unconventionally shaped ice rink, and build in various lighting & special effects positions. These requirements were made more difficult in that most of it had to be contained in a stage only 10" high which had to support the weight of actual draft horses and period wagons."

"We were also in charge of all spaces on the actual field of play, responsible for making sure all equipment was integrated into the scenic elements."

"The biggest challenge of the project was dealing with the environment." said Schreiber, who spent several months on-site leading up to the games, overseeing set construction from the ground up. "Because the set would be outdoors for more than 3 months (the base set is also being used for the opening ceremonies of the Paralympic Games), it had to be treated as a semi-permanent installation. The winter snow, rains, and continual freezes and thaws hampered installation, finishing, and maintenance."

Entertainment Design Corporation is proud to have been part of such a monumental project for which we have possibly built the largest contiguous stage surface in the world.
